Simon Springs Community School students were surprised on Tuesday with a visit from Tennessee Titans players Cody Barton and Jermaine Johnson II as part of the Titans' "Take a Titan to School" initiative.

Barton and Johnson spent time interacting with students, joining in on games and activities. The players also handed out Titans swag to students and staff members to cap off their visit.

Congratulations to the Oakland High volleyball team on winning its first match in the 2026 TSSAA Division I-AAA state tournament.

In their first trip to state in school history, the Lady Patriots defeated Collierville 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-23) at Siegel High School.

Oakland’s next match is at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Siegel High against the winner of Summit-Science Hill.

Bill Nye “The Science Guy” surprised students with a special presentation as part of the prize package for fourth-grade teacher Ivy Miller, winner of the 2026 America’s Favorite Teacher competition hosted by Colossal.

During the visit, Nye shared his own childhood memories of the start of Space Age and told students what they could expect to see from space exploration as they grow older. Chief ambassador of The Planetary Society, Nye is an internationally known and award-winning science educator, inventor, engineer and TV show host.

Miller’s winnings also came along with a check for $25,000, which she received during the celebration.

Students in Smyrna High School’s TV & Film Production program have an opportunity to create commercials for a local business, with the goal of seeing their work on television.

Fourteen students will form seven teams to compete for the chance to develop an advertising campaign for Blue Coast Burrito, a local restaurant with 11 locations in Middle Tennessee and three other states. Shortly after returning from fall break, students met with Blue Coast representatives, who shared the company’s marketing needs and target audience.

Between now and Thanksgiving break, each team will develop a commercial concept and pitch it directly to Blue Coast, instructor Kyle Dietz said. The top two teams will produce official video campaigns for the restaurant, including a 30-second commercial, a 15-second version for social media and a six-second spot.

Sophomore Aaron Alvarez said he was excited about the opportunity, particularly because most students in the class are in their second year of AV Production.

“(Dietz) emphasized how important this is, to be working with a business during high school,” Alvarez said. This semester, students have worked on projects ranging from movie trailers to mini-documentaries.

Students will gain more than camera skills through the project. Dietz said the experience will help them develop communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills while learning to meet professional expectations.

The partnership is a natural fit, as Blue Coast Burrito sponsors Smyrna Today, the school’s student-produced daily news program.

“This is exactly the kind of authentic experience we want our students to have,” Dietz said.

REMINDER: The College Fair for English Language Learners and students with disabilities takes place Monday, Oct. 19 at Stewarts Creek High in Smyrna.

This event is designed to help English Language Learners and students with disabilities prepare for life after high school. 

Representatives from technical colleges, two- and four- year colleges will be on site and families can learn about financial aid, scholarships and college disability services.

Attention rising juniors and seniors — applications for Tennessee's Governor's School Program are now open.

Governor's School is an opportunity for rising 11th and 12th graders to participate in one of 11 challenging programs during the summer of 2027.
